Friends of the Vermont Veterans' Home

In 1865 President Lincoln made a vow that America would always “care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow.” The Vermont Veterans’ Home has been honoring that promise since 1884. The Friends of the Vermont Veterans home is dedicated to helping make sure that mission continues to be a success into the future.

As American soldiers protect our democracy and human freedom throughout the world every day, the need to continue to invest in supporting our veterans is more important than ever… and more challenging. Each new generation of veterans has new needs that must be balanced by the staff at the Veteran’s home. Each year health care costs increase, and state budgets are dwindling.

Fulfilling the Promise

Friends of the Vermont Veterans' Home

Supporting our Vermont veterans is something you can be proud of and crosses all political lines and affiliations. This is supporting those who have risked their lives and sometimes made the greatest sacrifice, and supporting their wives and widows. This is the friends, families, and fellow veterans who understand that by coming together to support our veterans in need we are supporting the promise of Abraham Lincoln, and ultimately the promise of America.

Our Mission

Friends of the Vermont Veterans' Home

The Mission of the Friends of the Vermont Veterans’ Home is to create and maintain a circle of friends who support the Vermont Veterans’ Home to provide the best quality of care to the veteran residents and families.

Here's how you can help

Friends of the Vermont Veterans' Home

By giving to the Friends of the Vermont Veterans’ Home you help us to bridge the gaps between the needs of veteran residents and government funding. We need your help to create an essential Capital Fund that will insure that the Home will have the resources to provide the necessary services needed for veterans for years to come. Your support also allows us to communicate and promote the benefits and services available to veterans at the Vermont Veterans’ Home.

The Vermont Veterans Home new pavilion was made possible by a donation from a former resident.
Alan Gibney served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers from 1969 to 1976, in Thailand, Germany, and Vietnam. He left the Armed Forces with the rank of Captain. When he had retired to the home he had participated in fishing derbies, which are held twice annually in the home's duck pond, and had seen the difficulty wheelchair bound residents had in accessing the pond. He donated roughly $100,000 to the Friends of the Vermont Veterans Home, for the purpose of constructing the pavilion as a place for all residents to enjoy. Alan Gibney passed away in 2014 after a battle with Lou Gehrig's Disease. He is sorely missed. Gibney was also the driving force behind creating an ALS support group at the Veterans Home, and helped organized Bennington County's first Walk to Defeat ALS, which took place a few months after his death.
